Taus: The Peacock’s Voice
Now the Taus – this one’s special. The name literally means “peacock,” and when you see one, you’ll understand why. The scroll at the top is often carved into a peacock shape. It’s art before it’s even an instrument.
The Taus story:
- Deeply connected to religious music
- Bigger than Esraj, with a distinct resonating chamber
- The sound is fuller, more powerful
The Taus was born from a specific need – to create devotional music that could move people spiritually. And it did that job beautifully. While the Esraj found its calling in Rabindra Sangeet, the Taus became the voice of spiritual expression.
Different purpose, different sound, same family tree.
